The genus “Daphnia” is a group of aquatic organisms which are commonly known as “water fleas” and can range in body length from 0.2–8.0 mm with the exception of Leptodora, which measures up to 18 mm. Daphnia are commonly found in freshwater. Daphnia are extremely widespread and common throughout the world. Daphnia pulex is the most common species of the water flea, an organism which can be found in almost every permanent, eutrophic (nutrient-rich) water body. A few species are marine, but generally Daphnia, including Daphnia pulex, are freshwater organisms ( Miller, 2000 ).
